The Penang Turf Club (PTC) has voted to sell its historic land in Batu Gantong following an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Monday. The motion to dissolve the club was overwhelmingly supported, with 146 members in favor and only three against.
With the current market value of commercial land in George Town at approximately RM700 per square foot, the site is expected to be worth around RM6 billion once converted to commercial status. However, converting the land from its current recreational use to a mixed-development property is estimated to cost about RM1 billion.
The PTC, established in 1864, is the oldest horse-racing club in Malaysia and has a membership of 600. The club’s storied history began with a land grant on Macalister Road, where it built its first wooden and attap buildings in 1869. In 1939, the PTC moved to its present prime location next to Taman Jesselton Heights.
The club’s dissolution marks the end of an era for horse racing in Penang, leaving the Selangor Turf Club and Perak Turf Club as the remaining active clubs in Malaysia.
Any decision on the specifications of the Penang light rail transport (LRT) will be made by the Transport Ministry as it is a Federal project, says Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister said that an announcement will be made once the specification is finalised.
“With all due respect, the state government has no locus standi to announce the specification,” said Loke when asked to comment on the statement made by state transport and infrastructure committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari in the recent state assembly that Penang is looking into a “low to medium capacity system” for the Penang LRT Mutiara Line project.
Loke was speaking at a press conference after opening the 57th Asean Senior Transport Officials Meeting here on Tuesday (June 11).
Zairil said the state will not choose a system that has a high capacity like Kelana Jaya LRT Line which can accommodate up to 30,000 passengers as it is not suitable for Penang.
He said the state will choose a scalable system, probably starting with two carriages.
The 29km LRT project comprises 20 stations, including two interchange stations at Komtar and Penang Sentral, with work beginning later this year.

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has allocated RM5.2mil for the provision and upgrading of neighbourhood parks this year.
Mayor Datuk A. Rajendran said with the allocation, MBPP would be able to create more neighbourhood parks in various residential areas.
“We also provide regular maintenance for every neighbourhood park under the council’s jurisdiction,” Rajendran said in his speech during the state-level National Landscape Day at Bukit Jambul neighbourhood park in Bayan Lepas.
“This is because we believe that with proper maintenance and upgraded facilities, these parks will be well-utilised by residents in surrounding neighbourhoods and make housing areas more liveable.
“For example, Bukit Jambul neighbourhood park was completed last year at a cost of RM714,000.
“This park is surrounded by trees and equipped with facilities for recreational activities.”
Also present at the event were state housing and environment committee chairman Datuk Seri Sundarajoo Somu, state local government, town and country planning committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye and Batu Uban assemblyman A. Kumaresan, as reported by Buletin Mutiara.
In his speech, H’ng said a target had been set for Penang to plant 100,000 pinang (palm) trees for next year’s National Landscape Day event.
He said MBPP and Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) would be instructed to find locations for the planting of the trees.
The state-level celebration was attended by Yang di-Pertua Negri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak and his spouse Toh Puan Khadijah Mohd Noor.
