RM30mil to upgrade 12 markets, hawker sites on Penang Island

Penang Island City Council (MBPP) has allocated RM30mil for the renovation and upgrade of at least 12 markets, food complexes and hawker sites this year, says mayor Datuk A. Rajendran.

“In 2023 alone, 15 such projects were completed while 16 will be completed this year,” he said, adding that the upgrades were being done throughout the island.

“The latest project to be completed is the Padang Brown Food Complex on Anson Road, which has 53 stalls.

“This project, which began in August last year and was completed in March, cost RM389,195 to instal an additional roof.

“In 2021, we also upgraded the piping system here at a cost of more than RM95,000.”

Rajendran said the installation of an additional roof was an initiative by MBPP to enhance the infrastructure at Padang Brown Food Complex, thereby improving hawkers’ and customers’ comfort.

He was speaking to reporters after a ceremony to mark the project’s completion.

The event was also attended by Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, who is also Deputy Finance Minister, state local government, town and country planning committee chairman Jason H’ng Mooi Lye, MBPP secretary Cheong Chee Hong, Komtar assemblyman Teh Lai Heng and MBPP councillors Tan Soo Siang and Nicholas Theng.

Floating solar farm being considered for Penang Harbour

A floating solar farm – one large enough to power 6,000 homes – is being considered for Penang’s harbour.

Its primary purpose is to supply cruise ships with renewable energy, making Penang Port appealing for international cruise lines eager to use sustainably produced electricity.

The Star has learnt that this entails creating a solar farm that floats on a sheltered quarter of Penang’s harbour stretching over 4ha, the size of three World Cup football fields.

On a sunny day, it is expected to churn out 30 megawatts of electricity, which theoretically will be enough for 6,000 homes.

Tentatively, the potential site is between North Butterworth Container Terminal and Dermaga Dalam off mainland Penang.

This effort to produce electricity at sea is because come 2030, cruise ships may not call on ports without renewable energy (RE).

“The year 2030 is not a deadline but a goal proposed for the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) to seriously look into RE, or cruise ships may not call on our ports unless certain measures are in place to reduce pollution,” said Penang Port Sdn Bhd (PPSB) chief executive officer Datuk Sasedharan Vasudevan.

Planning ahead, Sasedharan said preliminary feasibility studies are being conducted on using solar photovoltaic offshore floating farm system, which is a large-scale installation of solar panels.

“They float on water, such as oceans, lakes or reservoirs and the system harnesses the power of the sun to generate electricity.

“This system proposes to further increase the use of solar electricity in the PPSB terminal,” he said.

Sasedharan said the project focused on generating solar energy for consumption of the North Butterworth Container Terminal (NBCT) as there is no land or rooftop space at the container yard.

“Since we have proposed shore power at the Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, the RE can be used to power the terminal and cruise ships,” he said.

The Star reported in February that RM50mil will be spent on this project.

“There are areas in Penang’s harbour calm enough for floating solar farm, but we need to ensure it is feasible.

“It makes sense to use RE for shore power rather than relying on the national power grid.

“The latest cruise lines are all pursuing RE as a major step in reducing pollution because a big cruise ship produces carbon equivalent to 20,000 cars,” added Sasedharan.

Food Bayana – Malaysia’s first semi-automated food hub in Bayan Lepas

Property News/ 20 August 2024 No comments

The two-storey food court at the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone, known as Food Bayana, represents a significant leap into the future where technology, innovation, and sustainability converge.

Led by Pentamaster Corp Berhad, this food court marks a notable milestone in Malaysia’s journey towards creating innovative and eco-friendly lifestyle hubs.

Pentamaster Corp Berhad Group executive chairman Datuk Chuah Choon Bin highlighted that Food Bayana is one of three key components of the Bayana Project, which also includes Bayana Hub and Bayana Parc.

“Five years ago, the Bayana Project began with a simple idea: to transform three parcels of land offered by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC) into bustling food and lifestyle destinations.

“These parcels, measuring 20,000, 25,000, and 8,000sq ft respectively, presented unique challenges that required innovative solutions.

“Parcel B (Food Bayana), the focal point of today’s celebration, posed a particularly difficult challenge due to its relatively narrow 25,000-square-foot size.

“To maximize space, we decided to construct a two-storey food court, with food stalls on the ground floor and dining areas above.

“However, this design introduced a new problem: how to efficiently deliver food to customers seated upstairs.

“This is where Pentamaster’s expertise in automation came into play. The solution is a fleet of automated robots that transport food between floors via an elevator.

“Customers place their orders at the counter, and food stall tenants dispatch their meals upstairs using these robots, eliminating the need for diners to carry their trays themselves,” Chuah explained during his speech at the Food Bayana launch this morning.

Chuah also shared that, to further enhance the dining experience, Pentamaster introduced an innovative food delivery system on the upper floor.

“Food is delivered to designated lockers, which notify customers via their smartphones when their orders are ready for pickup.

“This seamless integration of robotics and automated storage demonstrates Pentamaster’s expertise in automation technology and its commitment to improving customer convenience,” he added.

Beyond automation, the Bayana Project also sets new benchmarks in sustainability.

Pentamaster is actively pursuing Green Building Index (GBI) certification, aiming for a Gold rating for Food Bayana.

If successful, this would make the Bayana food court the first in Malaysia to achieve GBI Gold certification, further solidifying its status as a pioneer in green building initiatives.

Chuah also announced that the Bayana Hub on Parcel A is scheduled to open by June 2025, while Bayana Parc on Parcel C will commence operations on Jan 1, 2025.

“The five-storey Bayana Hub will feature a variety of facilities, including a drive-thru restaurant, convenience stores, gym facilities, and a rock climbing wall, catering to the needs of modern urban dwellers. Our co-working spaces provide the ideal environment for creativity and productivity.

“Bayana Parc, with its nature-inspired design, promises an upscale dining experience that combines the tranquility of the forest with contemporary aesthetics,” he said.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow expressed pride that Food Bayana had successfully integrated a digital payment system and robotic technology into its operations.

“Food Bayana operates as the first semi-automated food hub in the region, utilising robot technology to deliver food to customers.

“I am confident that this project will undoubtedly add value to the surrounding area, creating income opportunities for the people and enabling them to enjoy a better quality of life.

“This innovation reflects the progressive spirit of the free industrial zone,” he said, thanking Pentamaster for successfully initiating the effort.
