Opening of second Penang bridge put off again

Property News/ 9 November 2013 Leave a comment

Motorists eager to try out the second Penang bridge linking Batu Maung here and Batu Kawan on the mainland will have to wait a little longer.

Expectations of travelling on the 24km bridge – the longest in South-East Asia and 20th longest in the world – ran high after it was reported that works would be completed yesterday, and the link accessible several days later.

A source said workers were still putting up the final touches and the soonest the bridge could be ready was in about a month’s time.

Jambatan Kedua Sdn Bhd (JKSB) public relations and communications deputy manager Azizi Azizan said practical work on the bridge’s structure and other heavy construction had been completed as of yesterday.

“What’s left now are the small fittings like lighting, drainage, wiring and installation of the toll houses,” he said.

Azizi said once the fittings were done, the bridge and its other structures would then go through safety auditing.

“That will also be carried out in stages,” he said, adding that the Works Ministry would decide on the date of the launch.

Construction of the RM4.5bil bridge commenced on Nov 8, 2008.

    I not sure whether the definition of “PROVIDE” is meant here in our country. Eg, my ex-company said they provided me with Pg Bridge toll card, means I don’t pay ANYTHING for company usage.

    Nevertheless I would appreciate IF they used our TAX PAYER money with “QUALITY INFRASTRUCTURE” and no toll impose. I will be happy IF my taxes are wisely used for benefit of the people at the right place and time.

    I would also very much like the idea of a toll free bridge. So if the feds builds a toll free bridge for us, technically it means they are using the common pool of money (which was contributed by income tax, crude oil royalties, company tax, etc from the whole country) to build a bridge and pay for the subsequent ongoing maintenance for the hundreds of years to come, that will predominantly only benefit penangites. Nice huh!…:) We might as well suggest the gov to provide free petrol for everyone….:)….What about free ferry rides? Free internet? Free mobile phones? …:)

    Haha, so it’s very clear that we can’t have everything for free, unless we own a money printing machine as powerful as the one US currently has (print as much as you can without devaluation)….:)

    First, I am kind of agree with @SiaoLang that we should not use common pool of money for Penang Bridge, which only benefit to Penangites. But think twice, this Penang bridge is only the 2nd or 3rd major project in Penang after 1st Penang bridge and Komtar (maybe) since independent. Penang income tax contribution since then definitely much much greater that this 2nd Penang bridge. See how much money they use to developer KL and Iskandar. Those money also comes from common pool, and partially Penangites money. So, what’s wrong to have a toll free bridge?

    Btw, I do agree to have minimal toll for bridge and highway because they need maintenance.

    @Hemsley

    The topic of who should get how much out of the common pool is extremely complicated. Should there be a direct correlation between how much tax you contribute vs how much you should get for infra? Well, the answer to that is again not straight forward, depends on what your perspective is.

    Imagine you’re a parent with limited resources, would you be giving more resources to the child in the family who has most potential so that he/she can have it all, or should you give more resources to the child who is less capable as the most capable one can take care of himself, or should you ………etc?…:)

    Again, we have been hearing that penangites contribute a big percentage of personal income tax, but how much and what’s the significance? Well, if you had paid a little bit more attention, you’d know that the total personal income tax FOR THE WHOLE OF MALAYSIA that the gov collected is about RM20bil, about only 10% of the total revenue that the gov collected. That RM20 bil is less than company income tax alone and less than crude oil tax alone…..:)

    @Hemsley

    I did not say we should or should not use common pool of money for Penang Bridge, I was only trying to emphasize that resources is limited but everyone thinks they are the most entitled to that pool of limited resource…:)

    i agree with minimal toll but i dont think toll free probably not the best way. Even tunnel also will be charged a toll. All of this is necessary in terms of maintenance
