Seberang Perai set to become the next big thing in tourism
Penang’s mission of diversifying tourism offerings on the mainland took a major step today after the launch of the ‘Opposite Side of the Island – Seberang Perai campaign’ at Iconic Hotel in Bukit Mertajam.
As part of the ‘Experience Penang’ campaign, the highlight of today’s launch was the Seberang Perai tourism product promo video, which featured interesting and exciting tourist attraction spots – from the Frog Hill, Kampung Agung and Cherok To’Kun Hill to Design Village Mall, IKEA Batu Kawan and others.
State Tourism and Creative Economy Committee chairman Yeoh Soon Hin, who was present to officiate the ceremony, said today’s campaign aimed at bringing domestic and international visitors to Penang to experience the various tourism spots, particularly on the mainland.
“This is very much in line with the Penang Tourism Master Plan, which integrates the new National Tourism Policy (2020 – 2030) and the state’s Penang2030 vision of a ‘Family-Focused Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation’.
“The state aspires to diversify tourism products all over the island and mainland. Penang has a variety of tourism offerings that are undiscovered, especially those in Seberang Perai.
“With the wide array of agrotourism and ecotourism offerings, Seberang Perai can also be developed and transformed into a nature-based tourism destination.
“This will also create a better variety of tourism experiences that can satisfy all types of visitors who come to our state,” Yeoh said in his speech during the launching of the ‘Opposite Side of the Island – Seberang Perai campaign’ at Iconic Hotel in Bukit Mertajam today.
Relatively, he also reminded visitors to spend at least five to seven days in Penang because the state is filled with must-see places that are quite impossible to cover in a short stay.
“If you wish to explore Penang well enough to uncover its hidden gems, then make sure to stay longer because you will need it,” Yeoh added.
Among those present during the launch were Penang Global Tourism chief executive officer Ooi Chok Yan and Chief Minister Incorporated deputy general manager Bharathi Suppiah.

wah no joke ah? They are touting IKEA as a tourist attraction?? Has the state admin’s intellectual gone into such deprived level that they cannot come up with decent ideas? It seems those politicians in there get all energized and innovative only when it’s time to procure new luxury official cars!!
Finally Islander has nothing doubt on next 10years trend for mainland as most of new mega development will take place in mainland. Congratulations for all investor.
Islans currently too pack & nothing much mega development.
Mainland is future of Penang..
Most importantly, Penang is a safer place.
Mainland is the next gem for penang for sure, island development will be stagnant soon
Anyone have the website or information of the “Penang Tourism Master Plan”?
Is good to hear it too. Good job..
@NG
No stagnant. Andaman island in gurney drive is the future of Penang. 35 years master plan in that location included all government office retail affordable house/condo terrace commercial tower all in that reclaimed land.
In South, we have PICC/PIX/Penang world city reclaimed land/The light city on going & more to come….
@Internation
No mat lajak ?
@Sammy More risky than mat rempit. For mat rempit, one can at least be pre-warned by the “loud roaring noise” of their mechines before hand !
How fast do you have to drive in order to kill 8 cyclists all at once?
Yeah, mainland will attract more investor compare to island. Next 50 year of development of penang will be in mainland.
@Gocart
as fast as the mat cyclists…
@TCTan
No need next 50 years. Even next 10 years also nothing. Too slow. All kosong even a new project. Sad..
When you pass away, or grandson then maybe some development.
Actually, it’s not a matter of fast development vs slow, or mega development or not. In fact, seberang perai has been growing at 2 times the rate of island in the last 35 years, consistently year over year, since the opening of Penang Bridge. The distribution of population was 3:2 for Island:Mainland 35 years ago, vs 2:3 now. Seberang Perai is already a mega city itself if you happen to observe the traffic along it’s north south highway during peak hours.
So the question is, as of now, where is more prestigious? Mainland or Island? I believe 80% will say Island, and of course you always have the weird ones which is the 20%. No doubt Seberang Perai will be attracting more and more investments by virtue of it’s vast available land, but it will always remain a port+industrial township with container trucks all over the place, unless our federal gov decides to move the container terminal away lah!
Long story short, wealthy people gets attracted to Paris not because it’s a fast growing city, but because of it’s entrenched attributes which appeals to them. Same goes for PG island, of course at a much much smaller scale compared to Paris lah. Hahahaha.
@Internation
Moreover, the Kamikaze dive from high ground with the bike already brake-dismantled could catch up to 50mph speed(equivalent to that Myvi @50mph) ! Isn’t that Harakiri ?
Yeah by trend, mainland shall slowly take over island
dusty and boring Seberang Perai will always cheaper than Island. It looks booming simply because it starts from a lower base…except Batu Kawan which look promising..
@Oh nice
Great developement & promising. More affordable house will build later. However occupied rate horrible low. Hopefully more people coming in later. Overhang housing in batu kawan is highest among Penang. Hopefully more affordable house upnext in this zone. Penang people need that.
Actually booming now is bukit mertajam, batu kawan still way to go
@Kawan jangan lawan
35 years? I believe even 50 years later after you past away still not happening yet as the development & growing population way way too slow. You can invest & later your son or grandson will grateful on you. Batu kawan is good as a brand new township but the development stage & planning is not too good as 70% land is for industrial commercial purpose. Off course government state trying put as much of effort to boost it up. However, you wait & see after 10 years will remain the same if you invested in batu kawan for residential. You can say million million of house value but nobody want since demand vs supply is not balance. BM is booming however, it may drop later as you wait & see for next 3 years to come because of pure organic population in that area instead of investor to go in. It’s a similar place like penang in air itam all depend on local. Island is occupied but if new township in plan then definitely will boom as basic infrastructure already that. The unique of island in culture/invetsment/life style is irreplaceable in mainland. However, that’s pro & cons between them.
@Oh+no.
no industries, no jobs, no jobs means no people, People is what make a place boom. now that it has good connectivity, a little bit of shopping, colleges and soon private hospitals, and this and that hub, batu kawan is the complete package. BM already mature, nothing major will happen there.
@Oh nice
The package is complete or not for batu lawan or kawan is decided by the market. It’s going to take time. 10 years? 20 or 30 or 50 or after you past away? Probably still long to go & you will see it later when old. I can guarantee it’s a good development of township but definitely way way behind to mature yet. And going to be success or not. Nobody know and is a premium township or just a failure town ship development also nobody can guarantee. It’s good to have a idea dream or dream to be big. However, dream vs reality really terribly far. You wait & see after another 10 years. Mark my work here.
@Batu Karang
well, at least it is planned to be a success, the rest you don’t have to dream just open your mind and see with your own eyes..haha
@Oh nice
At least? All project are planned to success. However, just a fairly tales always. I don’t say Batu kawan is not good but too many factors around will affect this project. Our government putting alot of resources in mainland but less of population & market to bring this development into world stage. Even island also not up to that level yet. Overall very slow market definitely Batu kawan too. Probably next 30 years will see some result.
oh ya ya…..planned to be a success. Even the Rohingya refugees are so impressed that they couldn’t wait to check it out and to personally ‘Experience Penang’. They will be checking out from the Frog Hill, Kampung Agung and Cherok To’Kun Hill to Design Village Mall, IKEA Batu Kawan and others. People is what make a place boom, Rohingyas also people right??…..:))))))
Rohingyas? LOL…illegal immigrants are all over malaysia lar, what are you going to do about it?
BM is marching for another level of development, might become the next island
@Oh nice
Huh??? You mean the Rohingyas all over Malaysia are breaking out of their detention lockups?? OMG! Then better be very very careful, as there are 3 big detention lockups in Mainland PG alone! And there is latest alert from the authority that a small portion of these escapees are actually hard core criminals back in their own country. Sh*t man!
@NG
Yes. BM is another Air itam/Farlim of Penang.
