Proposed Penang LRT routes and stations

TMP (1)REHDA Penang (Real Estate and Housing Developers’ Association) members led by Chairman, Datuk Jerry Chan were in Komtar for a Transport Master Plan (TMP) briefing on 26 Feb .

Chan congratulates the Penang state for coming up with a workable plan. He said, “It is a good plan. There is procedure and there is principle. The TMP will take Penang forward to accommodate its population growth, economy growth, improve living and can alleviate congestion.”

“In fact, this should have been done 20 years ago. Now, there is a plan to work out how to pay for these works. Therefore, we see something more concrete and a tangible means to pay for the project.”

The session was conducted by the Project Delivery Partner, SRS Consortium and was chaired by exco member for Local Government, Traffic Management & Flood Mitigation Chow Kon Yeow and other exco members Jagdeep Singh Deo and Lim Hock Seng.

REHDA members also had the opportunity to have the first hand view of several slides which show the proposed LRT lines and stations on the Penang island and the mainland.

    Why LRT? LRT is design for a medium to low capacity service… And meanwhile Monorail is not sustainable for long distance service like those in the mainland…. MRT is the way to go for those lengthy lines…. And why even bothered to use BRT in Batu Kawan when the expected population over that area is going to go on super high peak on next 10-15 years time? Are we planning for the future? or plan in the present situation for the future.

    Does all 3 reclamations (Permatang Damar Laut, Teluk Kumbar and Gertak Sanggul) have to be separate islands? Why not just merge them all directly at the southern part of Penang Island instead just as the recent Gurney Whalf project (no need to create rivers between them)?

    They left out the west part of Penang Island (which is Balik Pulau) including Teluk Bahang, Batu Feringghi and Tanjung Bunga for this LRT project scope.

    @Cameron Kang
    Not sure what’s the difference between LRT and MRT except for sizing. But I can forsee that having more LRT frequency might be as interesting as a less frequency MRT since people don’t like waiting.

    Also I believe this is not the final phase of the project as many other ongoing plans might come after this.

    @Daniel
    Water always needs to drain somewhere before it actually creates its own way and washes the island away.

    @IR buyer

    Difference between LRT vs MRT is the capacity (eg. # of people moved per hour). LRT/monorail cost much less to build than MRT, and much easier to build without having to dig underground tunnels. Plus, most of the beams/columns for LRT track can be pre-fabricated in the factory and transported to site for installation only (therefore much less traffic obstruction). LRT/monorail is perfect for a place like penang with medium population density.

    @Daniel

    The three islands are mainly for industrial use, so you need rivers/canals for industrial waste discharge.

    The plan looks good to me. However, I am more concerned about the negative impact of land reclamation in the south of the island on the environment, as well as the fishing villages in Teluk Kumbar. I do hope they did take these into consideration.

    If hovercraft service that connects tg bungah area to Ftz area then enroute to airport area is more convenient.
