Penang Sky Cab project to be cancelled if public disagrees
The proposed RM300 million Penang Sky Cab project linking the island and the mainland will be cancelled if the public objects to it, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
Lim said in implementing the project, the state would take into account the views and feedback from the public.
“We will also not carry on with the project if it fails the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA), ” he said in a press conference at the Seberang Prai Municipal Council (MPSP) office in Bandar Perda today.
This comes after Lim had reportedly announced the proposal, saying the project would offer public transportation alternatives to Penangites.
The cable cars expected to be completed by 2018 will take about 15 minutes to link Penang Sentral in Butterworth to Nordin Street Ghaut on the island.
Lim said the project which is still in the proposal stage will not affect the sea and the environment as only nine towers will be built in the sea, adding that the state aims to provide more transportation options for the people.
“It helps connectivity between the island and mainland and will also boost tourism,” he said.
Meanwhile, Lim also said the state government will allocate RM12 million to upgrade and renovate the Seberang Jaya wet market and hawker complex.
He said the cost to renovate the 4.5 acres market will be undertaken by the Penang Development Corporation (PDC).
Work on the project is expected to start at the end of this year and is scheduled to be completed in two years.
In another development, Lim also praised MPSP for making it into the Malaysia Book of Records as the first council to receive five quality management system certificates.
MPSP president Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the council was listed on April 13.

Just curious, why still need the Sky Cab when there will be undersea tunnels from Georgetown to Butterworth?
As for LRT, can they extend one big circle of Penang Island and make a stopping point/station? Perhaps, eg.: Balik Pulau -> Teluk Kumbar -> PIA (Penang International Airport) -> Batu Maung -> Bayan Lepas -> Bayan Baru -> Batu Uban, Gelugor -> Jelutong -> George Town -> Weld Quay -> Gurney Drive -> Tanjung Bunga -> Batu Feringghi -> Teluk Bahang -> Balik Pulau
sky Cab maybe one of most idea infra for Penang Island. It will reduce number of vehicle enter into Penang Island. The traffic condition will getting worth after the completion of 2nd bridge. Penang Island need more public transport rather than bridges. Also suggests that more parking spaces and interchange station to be build nearby.
cable cars are GREATLY affected by strong winds as they will sway up/down/left/right . The sea area is always very windy
Passengers inside will get “sea sick”
How do they plan to overcome this issue ?
i support the cable car idea as it help to resolve the traffic congestion in the state. i think in the long term, penang govt can restrict the amount of cars going into certain part of the island… but provide free city busses. this will definitely improve local business and tourism, not to mention reduce the greenhouse gas emission in general.
as part of environment protection because of having cable car, penang govt should suggest the cable car contractor to develop artificial reef around the cable car points… to promote fish breeding around the area…
theres much to consider when building sky cabs:-
1) is it gonna replace ferry for passengers?
2) hows is elderly gonna cope with height for using sky cabs
3) car park issues as suggested by earlier in both mainland and island
4) safety issues
5) as underground tunnel is ongoing, should we build LRT underground such as in HK?
BTW, theres lots of huge vessel passby the area. anything could happen
@penanglang
it same like genting and langkawi issue.
swing by wind……
nothing special……
@william
my parents truly love to see the view from height when go to HK Ocean park that is great….
How to help congestion? People from mainland travel to island by cable car then take what to work? I think cable car is more for tourism.
Isn’t better to go with LRT first?
@IsaacTan
It’s not so easy to run LRT without the numbers. Most public transport systems in the world are subsidized by gov. Even in Spore with such dense population, MRT is barely earning enough to sustain itself.
So the question comes, without a huge population, the LRT in Penang will start to loose a lot of money, who is going to subsidize it? The state gov? Well, ok then, where is the state going to get the money from? Hhmmm…., from maybe selling more reclaim land to developers, who in turn would charge home buyers exorbitantly ? And in the end, who pays for everything? Penangites !!!!
So Penangites pay dearly, while contractors and developers make big money. I hope our state authority is consciously aware of the long term impact to Penangites for making wrong decisions on major projects like this.
@roland
How you consider SG LRT was earning barely enough to sustain?
Earning S$1,163.9m FY2014 also consider barely sustainable?
Every country or state must go through a stage of improving basic infrastructure if wanted to progress. Have you seen any country that investor come in first then only build up the infra?
That’s why is good to shelve the cable cars idea, saved up the money and use it in some other area which is more beneficial!
If penangnites pay for the improvement of Penang itself, isn’t it penangnites also harvesting what they sow?
.
First things first. LRT is priority and best also to extend into Butterworth. – BM, Seberang jaya, Balik Pulau, Batu Maung and surrounding area. It will automatically increase the business revenue and tourist. Penang and Butterworth will grow together. Win Win Situation!!!
@KH
You go home and sleep lah! Still dearming about the LRT? Hahaha!!
LRT only for bangla worker and tourism using….because penang lang all have own car already…and the cable car i feel is a good thinngs for transfer the tourist from komtar area to butterworth penang sentral…it will 刺激 butterworth market since the penang central is coming soon
Forget abt the Lrt Monorail sea tunnel and whatever highway lah. federal gov will not approve it, general election coming soon, they will use that as bait to ask u vote BN !
