Congestion down at upgraded Jalan Masjid Negeri
A newly upgraded stretch of Jalan Masjid Negeri here has reduced traffic congestion during rush hour by some 15% according to the Penang Island City Council Engineering Department deputy director A. Rajendran.
He said the 600m stretch had been widened between 12m and 16m under a RM7.29 million project which was completed earlier this month.
Rajendran said other improvements to the section of road near the Jalan Udini roundabout include a U-turn just before the roundabout with dedicated entry and exit lanes.
He said removing the traffic lights at the Jalan Masjid Negeri and Jalan Delima intersection also allowed for smoother traffic flow.
“The Council is continuously monitoring the traffic flow so as to be able to further fine tune the system,” he said in a press conference today together with Penang Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow.
On the delay of the project originally scheduled for completion in Sept 2013, Chow said relocating trees and underground utility cables and pipes took up a lot of time.
He said there were 60 trees along the upgraded section which were relocated while utility companies had to remove and replace their pipes and cables.
“Relocating the trees caused a 10-month delay while removing and replacing utility cables and pipes caused an eight-month delay,” he said.

Good job!!
This is impressive, very smart I have to admit. They have eliminated a major bottleneck, at minimal cost.
However, we have to be mindful of the danger. The wider the roads get, the more cars you will have on the roads. It never ends. At the rate we’re building new homes on the island, the roads will jam again soon. So what’s next?
Just shifting traffic congestion from “A” to “B” spot. Good only in adding
the famous ” traffic lights” wherever possible.
15% reduction in traffic congestion is quite significant, but build highway better although more costly.
You can say even 25% reduction in traffic congestion.(Just shifting 25% in
traffic congestion from “A” to “B” spot). Pedestrians crossing had to build
bumps to compensate “pockets” of the people involve.
@Lousy
Jalan masjid negeri there worse. But this improvement is good for greenlane and farlim folks.
@sam
Definitely it’s worse in Jalan Masjid Negeri and many areas because the roads
in Penang its on a sharing basis.
Overall is significant improvement. Traffic is smoother that save a lot of my time after work daily. Great Job PNG Gov that made it happend after we suffer for long long time that not able to implement past year. This is the results can feel and see. Not only talk.
Good job !
Lousy job and lousy thinking !!!!!!!
Good job! I passed that road everyday for the past 15 years. I can see the difference it makes already..
Excellent job! Super smart to plan this out! With min land available yet it can create the space for the extra 2 lanes (left and right). From FTZ, PG bridge turning into greenland is very smooth. and i have been using the Jalan Masjid road for 2 -3 days with min traffic at ~7pm peak hour. it looks like traffic flow easily improve > 30%.
Penang is going nowhere under this type of planning. Just adding cars, teksi and
motorcycles on the road without building new roads and overhead bridges but
keep on adding more traffic lights.
It’s also silly smart like the new generation.
Agreed. PG has been growing super fast in the last 6 to 7 years. Adding more car, bigger population more tourists, more investments and more job is expected. Overall traffic in PG is still better then most of the big city. I am happy to continue stay in PG and retire in PG. Happy to see more idea is coming in to improve the traffic and it make an impact. Great Job! all the small and rapid improvement will make a major impact.
I see that there are many cyber troopers here as well trying to make a good thing look bad. Have been staying here for more than 45 years and this is the best i have seen the traffic flow. Maybe, some people are always negative towards progress and will always base your opinions on which side of the political fence you are sitting….
I was from Johor. Have been staying in PG for 20 years. I see the most progress make in the last 6 years. I am happily staying in PG and retire in PG too.
Salary is stagnant and you call this growing super fast ? Of course if you’re
from “kampung” getting to stay in Penang will be a blessing.
If you have the chance to see the real world other than Malaysia than you
will be “stunt” to see how others are progressing !!!!!
@Silly
nobody stosp you from migrating since you always not so happy here… lol..
@KK
Just like to see silly smart generation agreeing to lousy planning. It does
not make me unhappy but rather strange awkward feeling for people like
you succumb to this belief in “growing super fast Penang ?”
@Silly
well well well silly… majority think it is smart wo…
Penang is not growing super fast lah, just that developers are building lots and lots of un-needed homes for speculation. The coming 2 years we will see lots and lots of empty homes everywhere, which is unprecedented in Penang history.
But I have to admit this greenlane traffic improvement thing is rather smart. But unfortunately, that won’t bring us far. To become a metropolis of international standard, we will have to move away from private cars to mass rail transport. Road widening and patch up can only be a temporary solution.
This is good done.
message for neutral.
Accident will be happend all the time, u must take care ur own.
The more traffic light it hv, the more traffice jam u made.
Think abt traffic problem la. Dont think noncence
@KK
It’s silly smart !!!!!!
It’s going to have more accidents and more jam in Penang according to
you. You ‘re right.
@Silly
Well. what we are talking here is comment about the conditions of the newly open road. I have been staying in this area for the past 30 years and I have to say they have done what is best with the available resources. At least we can see the change rather than only complain all the time.
Of coz the best is we can build mega highways, lrt, mrt and etc etc.. But based on what capacity we going to build that. 1stly we don’t have the fund to do it. 2ndly our population in pg is not enough for a private firm to build the lrt as the the return is not going to cover the cost of building it. Overall I would say the overall problem every Malaysian facing now is a national issue and to leave that aside, I would still say overall its a good effort towards a better pg.
@Home
For 30 years and a slight changes you say it’s great !!!!! No wonder Malaysia
is experiencing “tortoise” speed of progressing!!!!!!!
We hear too often of not enough fund. With 30 years down the road I still
hear this or just a cover-up to save face ?
Overall well done! Talked to many who used that road. Most feeling Positive and give Thumbs up. Those who feel happy. pls stay positive and continue to enjoy the moment. For those who choose to be sad and negative. No one can stop u.
@ Silly
We will be happy to hear your input. Can you give the suggestion how to move forward for the next 30 years. Your input is valuable.
Overall well done! I talked to most people. They are felling positive and give thumbs up to this new traffic flow. Those who fell positive. Continue to stay positive and enjoy the moment. For those who feel sad and negative. No one can stop u.
@Silly
I would rather go slowly to be firm in step by step than over speed, do you know there is a price to pay for fast development? nothing is free… think about it. personally, Pg or Malaysia should go toward uniquely rather than followed the standard way like our neighbor, who said every country need to be developed or follow the same way like others? why not come up something differently? my 2cents
talk nonsense….talk no1, what is the suggestion? complaint no1, where are u when local authority need input to make it suit majority interest? Population in island not even reach 1mil, what the hack and economic sense to build LRT/MRT…etc.
@Silly
My point is at least there is a change rather than no change at all and of coz there are many limitations if you are talking about changes in the past 30 years. I would say its our nation as a while is not moving at the pace that all of us would hope for. but we are now talking about the initiative taken by the MBSP now to improve the traffic congestions and we have to admit that at least they are doing their work compared to the previous administration.
It would be great if you could contribute your great idea to the council or government if you have a superb idea in changing our country/state and I believe they are more than happy to accept your contribution/criticism as a Malaysian.

Good improvement, but I expect a few of it each year. There are many junctions, roundabout need similar improvement. Need to speed up the effort.
@Silly
Its not right to be offensive towards others. Everyone have their rights for their own opinion. You need to understand that expansion at certain place is very limited due to the poor planning in the past and some of the buildings is already there during our great grandfather time. Standstill happens because everyone single person drives a car on their own and if accidents happen, it takes time for the traffic to disperse.
its improve a lot a lot a lot on that road……
the design indirectly reduce the accident happen…..
love it feel it see it……
use your mouth cant help it….. :p
Haha…..ha….haha…….ha……”design indirectly reduce the accident happen” ?
“use your mouth cant help it….. :p” So use imaginations can help !!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Lousy
haha… really can’t stand sour grapes like you… everything also want to complain.. everything also not satisfied.. life must be very tough la like that..
@sam
So easy to please with a peanut will do. Of course you can’t understand or else you
won’t be praising this useless move. Too complacement by so many that so we are
not ready to compare with others.
@Lousy
mmmm.. useless to you ke? not my problem lo..
@sam
no need bother those negative thinker…….
he are stay in somewhere very far that no need use that road….. :p
@sam
Not your problem but you seem to be interested in defending the “useless
move”.
Staying in green lane for 20 years. Never see the traffics so smooth before. I was enjoying my car ride home at 6pm peak hour with min traffic. Save me easily 20 mins. Super smart planning to gain the 2 extra lanes, reduce 1 traffic light. Excellent job and well done!
It doesn’t help those coming from Tesco and from Gelugor only helping those to
make a U turn or going to B. Gambier. Changing jam to a different spot.
I drove thru tunnel just now. No traffic at tunnel and round about too at 6pm. I drove from gelugor/USM to Jalan masjid also very smooth yesterday. Less Car building up at the traffic lights at jalan tembaga and near caltex when I fetch my kids from school.
This was the data from the pass few days as I used this road few times a day to work and shuttle kids around to squash center, USM, gelugor and school. It helps to save a lot of my times. This is the best! Will continue to observe, share.and give input.

@Lousy
Useless to you doesn’t mean useless to me wo…
@SL
Any better suggestion you have? Netizen like to complain no matter what.
@Blabla
If you had followed my comments including those deleted you would
have realized a few suggestions had surfaced. Those deleted just to
“save face” for the authority.
@Lousy
I don’t see any constructive post from you other than all negative comment without any good reasoning behind your post. If you don’t mind, can you share with the netcitizen or maybe even give your constructive input to everyone of us here. I am sure the admin wont simply delete constructive post. They will delete harsh, improper, rude post from you.
Agreed. the comment not constructive at all. It is either negative without any good reasoning or data to support as compare to those actually using the road daily. besides the comment is more towards attacking individual input/feeling. Every one has the right to share the feedback. Once this is personal attack. it looks bad.
Action is louder than words…
With the limited resources and based on current situation…
This was the best action taken to improve the traffic flow…
At least we see progress and development for the better…
Good job Penang…
@Property 123
Do you really think this the proper way to improve the traffic flow ?
Adding an additional “U” turn before a roundabout to benefit those
living on the opposite side of the road ?
@Lousy
From the way you say it seems like you are one of the residents living in that area and the reason you attack all those individual views that praise the move is because now you need to drive further up to turn in and not at the traffic light.
If this is your view, then you are very selfish. Whats wrong if you drive an additional 500meter to make your turn and you don’t have to queue for the traffic light and everyone else don’t have to stuck at the traffic light when the light turn red.
Come on, don’t be so selfish and look at a bigger picture pls.
@Mond
Which traffic light you’re talking about ?
@Mond
I am looking at a bigger picture that’s why is not right in just benefiting
those living on the opposite side of the road by spending RM7.29 million
!!!! and it’s not eliminating the jam.
@Lousy
its not benefiting only those staying in that area. In fact it benefit all of them who uses the road. About the cost, you need to know that cost of building road is not cheap. so dont comment by simply looking at the figures itself. You need to look at the cost and the work involved. In Chinese, there is a saying “ciak bee mmm chai bee keh”.
@Mond
Of course it’s not cheap only in M’sia !!!! You have owned yourself a place
in MBPP. Just shifting traffic congestion from “A” to “B” spot.
The best solution for round about and the traffic light is.
1) There is left lane for those “go straight” in front of traffic light.
2) Allow to turn right when there is no car from opposite when green light.
Above 2 will eliminate the need of round about.
It is very beneficial to many as those who are turning back do not need to use the roundabout…This reduce and ease the traffic at the roundabout…A smart move indeed…
Lousy, please tell us your idea and give us your solution? Tell us and let us hear from you on how it should be done.
@Property 123
For many years the MPPP had organised “study trips” to Australia and S’pore
or just sight-seeing trips ? Do you really need the trips if Penang had limited
resources ? Ever year and till 40 years still limited resources ?
Overhead bridges and new roads are the only answer to do away roundabout
and traffic lights to reduce traffic congestion.
@ Lousy
What is the exactly your issue.every one and the actual user said the new road is good, save time and reduce traffic but you said lousy. which route causing u more problem than before. Let me know, I go and test out and do time study for u. I think and hope to answer your question about this change. I am the social engineer. Not belong to any political. I can share with u my fair opinion
@W
There is nothing to shout about or advertised it. All roads in Penang is
better than in the colonial days !!!!! I don’t need anyone advice, I just
like to argue with those “peanut” brain.
traffic bo jammed liao!!! ho liao…
Good for traffic jam. Money well spent and distributed to various pockets.
Why you like argue? are u a kampong chicken. support with fact. No wonder your name called lousy. Really Lou Sai. @Lousy
@Layman Comment
No wonder you have a peanut brain.
