Workers Village @ Juru
Workers village, a purpose built housing for legitimate foreign workers in Penang. The idea is to house the foreign workers in a properly planned and designated areas so as to minimize any problems that may arise while working in Penang. It is also expected to address some of the following issues:
- Safety and security of Malaysians as well as the foreign workers themselves
- Shortage in low cost housing and surge in rentals
- Cleanliness and comfort of the environment
- As a means to control proliferation of illegal workers
- To address the issue of depreciation of the value of properties whenever a sizable number of foreign workers chose to stay in a certain area
The first proposed workers village to be built on a 12.6 acres land located in Juru, near Bukit Minyak Industrial Park. Centurion Corporation Ltd, a Singapore based company, has won the proposal to build and operate the workers village through an open tender and accepted the letter of offer from PDC in November last year.
According to Centurion Corporation, the potential development of the Workers Village is planned to be carried out over two phases with the construction of 6,000 beds in each phase. Phase 1 of the Proposed Development is expected to complete in the 2nd half of 2016 and Phase 2 is expected to complete within 2 years after the completion of Phase 1.
The workers village is expected to include the following facilities:
- Internet room
- Games room
- Canteen
- Laundry
- Barber
- Grocery shops
- TV room/theatre
- Outdoor games
I was harassed every day of the nuisance posed by foreign workers who live next door to my house in Juru Heights AKA Jeselton Heights. Too many house converted to hostel foreign workers
Sundry shop there business will be booming..
Will it depreciate house value over in Juru / Bkt. Minyak area, which are near to this development?
@worried
Don’t you see the map on proposed loc ?? Taman Mangga, Taman Sentul Jaya, Taman Pinang….etc
phone shop, grocery, pasar malam…etc will be in good business.
Why so “racist” ? They are also humans. Since they are working in Malaysia , they should be treated like Malaysians
Is it going to be only foreigners ? Each country takes one block ? No chance of fighting among themselves ? Will there be gangs ?
It looks like it is going to be a ghetto area
Even without this workers village, this area is full of foreign workers. So it’s better to have an area built specially for them, so that the police can monitor their activities easier. It’s like what the British did last time during the communis time, where they put all the chinese in those villages to better monitor their movements.
Don’t underestimate the spending power of the foreign workers. Many of them have smartphone with big screens..
Will this trigger more international shopping center?
Interesting development. Cool idea. One area to focus on investment.
Please built it at Penang Island as well…
Too many new Taman been coverted to the hostel which surely will effect the services for the house due to building design is to cater 5 to 6 ppl and not 20++ person in a house.
It would be senseless to build it on island, as we should wean the industries on the island off from foreign blue collar workers. In other words, we don’t want low tech industries on island. Only high tech, high knowledge jobs should be allowed on island.
