Penang’s Mutiara Line LRT groundbreaking ceremony set for 11 January
The long-awaited Mutiara Line Light Rail Transit (LRT) project in Penang is set to officially begin with a groundbreaking ceremony on January 11, 2025. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will officiate the event, marking a significant milestone in Penang’s public transportation development.
Sungai Pinang state assemblywoman Lim Siew Khim shared updates on the project’s progress in a Facebook post on Monday. She reported that site preparation works are actively underway to ensure readiness for the ceremony. Contractors are working daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. until January 10, 2025, with tasks including area clearing, tent setup, and the installation of temporary infrastructure such as fencing and access roads.
Heavy machinery and transport activities along Lebuh Sungai Pinang and Lebuh Sungai Pinang 1 may cause disruptions in the Bandar Sri Pinang area, including dust, noise, and temporary parking constraints. To facilitate smooth operations, 13 parking spaces on Lebuh Sungai Pinang 1 have been reserved for contractor use.
Acknowledging the potential inconveniences, MRT personnel have apologised to the community and pledged to implement mitigation measures to minimise disruptions. Despite the challenges, the community looks forward to the benefits the LRT project will bring to Penang’s connectivity and growth.
