Dexcom opens high-tech facility in Batu Kawan
Dexcom Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a global leader in continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) technology for diabetes management, has officially opened a state-of-the-art facility in Batu Kawan Industrial Park (BKIP). Spanning 28 acres and covering approximately 887,510 square feet, the new facility marks a significant investment by Dexcom in Malaysia and represents a major boost to the nation’s medical technology industry.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by notable officials, including the Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, along with key figures from the Penang Development Corporation, Invest Penang, the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), and Dexcom’s senior leadership team. This gathering underscored the collaborative efforts between government entities and Dexcom in establishing Penang as a global MedTech hub.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasized Dexcom’s role in supporting Malaysia’s healthcare technology landscape, stating, “The establishment of this new facility highlights Dexcom’s continued commitment to take control of health through innovative continuous glucose monitoring systems. It also reaffirms Penang’s reputation as a global hub for advanced technological industries.” He further highlighted Penang’s standing as a center for MedTech excellence in Southeast Asia, noting that Penang’s infrastructure and ecosystem uniquely position it to meet the needs of medical device companies like Dexcom.
Datuk Sikh Shamsul Ibrahim Sikh Abdul Majid, CEO of MIDA, underscored the broader economic benefits of Dexcom’s investment. “Dexcom’s establishment in Malaysia signifies a pivotal moment for our medical devices sector,” he said. The facility aligns with Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan 2030, promoting innovation, skill development, and a resilient supply chain. Datuk Sikh Shamsul explained that the project not only brings advanced manufacturing capabilities to Malaysia but also strengthens the local supplier ecosystem and fosters job creation.
Dexcom Malaysia’s Managing Director and Vice President of Operations, Mr. Columba McGarvey, expressed pride in the facility’s opening. “Today’s ribbon cutting represents a meaningful step forward in our journey of innovation and impact,” he said, adding that the company is deeply committed to investing in both high-volume automation and local talent development.
Dexcom’s Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Jake Leach, reiterated the company’s mission, explaining, “Dexcom was founded 25 years ago with the mission to facilitate and improve the health of people with diabetes. Today, we have not only achieved this mission but also pioneered an industry that has transformed diabetes management.”
