Penang Transport Master Plan website launched
Information on the RM27bil Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) is now available with just a click of the mouse.
The public can now secure the latest details via pgmasterplan.penang.gov.my, said Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.
He said the public could also email feedback, suggestions and complaints on PTMP via pgmasterplan@penang.gov.my.
“We will take into account all feedback. The website also has answers to frequently asked questions about the master plan.
“There are also details on the RM6.3bil undersea tunnel by Consortium Zenith BUCG and the Sky Cab project by MRCB Bhd,” he said after launching the website at Komtar yesterday.
The tunnel will connect mainland Bagan Ajam with Gurney Drive while Sky Cab is a cable car link between Penang Sentral in Butterworth and the future development of Jelutong landfill.
State exco member Chow Kon Yeow, who was present, hailed the Bayan Lepas LRT as the future backbone of public rail transport in the state.
Its proposed systems, alignment, project structure, implementation plan and all related activities were submitted to the Land Public Transport Commission for approval.
The proposed central station will be on the former Sia Boey (Penang Hokkien for ‘Town’s End’) wet market site beside Komtar at the Lebuh Carnarvon junction.
Of its 27 proposed stations, 19 are to be in Komtar, Macallum Street area, Bandar Sri Pinang, the future Sky Cab station, East Jelutong, The Light Waterfront, Gelugor, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Batu Uban, Pesta site, Sungai Nibong, Bukit Jambul, Subterranean Penang International Convention and Exhibition (SPICE), Jalan Tengah, FIZ North, FIZ South, Sungai Tiram, Penang International Airport and Permatang Damar Laut.
Eight more stations are planned for the three proposed islands to be reclaimed off the southern coast.
The Bayan Lepas LRT will also have interchange stations connecting three more future LRT and monorail lines still on the drawing table.
They are the Gelugor-Butterworth LRT across the sea, the Paya Terubong-Komtar monorail and the Tanjung Tokong-Komtar monorail.
Chow said that upon implementation, the LRT was expected to contribute significantly to achieve the targeted 40% public transport usage-rate by 2030 in the region.
Among the other components of the PTMP are trams, e-bus, rapid bus transit, a pan- island expressway, a catamaran system and a RM100mil highway interchange upgrading project.
Three islands measuring 930ha, 566ha and 323ha are proposed to be created in the south to fund the PTMP.
The appointed Project Delivery Partner of the PTMP, SRS Consortium, has been actively engaging stakeholders on behalf of the state government.

website very slow!!!!!
Is it true that the project can only be implemented with approval from the Federal government?? If its true , Have the approvals obtained?
@Senggaran Sb
Not yet, the main contractor is responsible for the approval. If they can’t get approval, means the main contractor will loose the contract too.
if i remember correctly, Gamuda-consortium is the main con, and with Gamuda’s standing and track record + the know how to distribute small parcels of jobs to smaller sub-cons which are “connected” in the network of money distribution, considering the money involved, should have no problem with approvals.
Bigger house at cheaper price for the cm again?
A lot of problem with the plan, connected to “new” island, where as existing penang area is not benefiting from the plan.
I think he has a lot to gain for his own pocket. heard ppl asking to improve public transport to BP and T.K area but got turned down because “not many passengers”. However LRT plan straight to the new island. WTH!
At a forum this morning, we were briefed on the Pg Transport Masterplan and it appears to be a humongous and hideous project costing tons of $$$. This plan is supposed to take us 50 yrs down the road. In 50 yrs the transportation systems proposed will be obsolete. Why is even the monorail being considered- besides being extremely expensive it has shown not to be workable eg Malacca it has not been working for the last 5 years, in KL the operator of the monorail is I believe in the red. There are 3 different types of transportation being suggested in the master plan and these 3 are not integrated – in other words one has perhaps to take 3 types of transport to get to one’s destination – what does that mean for the elderly, disabled and to our pockets?? Can you imagine the numerous huge, ugly concrete stations all over the place and with overhead systems crawling all over ?? What happens if it malfunctions – passengers hang up in the sky? Why cant we think of having systems that run on the ground e.g. modernized trams like S. Francisco , cables run underground, etc ?
Believe me we are not AGAINST an improved mass transport system – but it needs to be thought out carefully , without damaging the looks , charm and feel of Penang. The people of Penang need to be briefed at forums, shown the details with artists impressions , etc. before plans are sent for approval .
What happened to the project SIA BOEY REBORN which was announced last year?
By the way, http//pgmasterplan.penang.gov.my/index.php/en/feedback is not accessible.
@SG Mah
So this tram can go how fast? So you will take a tram going 40 kmph from bayan lepas to komtar?
What is meant by “not integrated”? Does the KL system not also have interchange stations to change trains? You expect monorail to be like a taxi?
So if it is a tram system totally no need to change tram is it? Even if going from Butterworth to Air itam or Tg, tokong to Air itam?
Another thing, ALL our streets really big enough for trams?
If going to critisice, please at least suggest realistic alternatives, not half baked rubbish, maybe we need tuk tuks like in hatyai, but electric, and powered by app like Uber, now that is a realistic alternative.
We object the Mono Rail Track! We’re greatly concerned that Mono Rail will pass through Hotel Jen Penang and ST. Giles along the narrow Jalan Magazine, it will no doubt have a major impact on the business activities there. We have been operating Hotel Jen for the last 30 years and invested millions to manage a reputable hotel that are ideal for business travelers by making them feel at home. Our concern is that this mono rail track along Jalan Magazine will jeopardise the surroundings by causing the driveway and front of the hotels to more congested and chaotic. A downturn of hotel turnover is expected when travelers, buses, vans, taxis and private vehicles find their route hard to navigate and access. When construction activity is on going, business will suffer with all the dust, noise and confusion. We foresee that these will discourage perspective hotel guests and customers to our property.
@Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman
Hello, what is there to object? U think it will be approved?
@Dapwas
Hahaha….you’re right! Objecting to something that will not happen? All election gimmicks lah!
it supposed to be that way. why bother to show you the details if not going to happen.
