Lim signs for Tg Bungah-Teluk Bahang, Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Ex’way-Air Itam, Gurney Drive roads

Three expressways to ease traffic flow in the state will be completed before the 6.5km undersea tunnel is ready.

This was revealed by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng after the signing of a preliminary agreement for the construction of a few major traffic-related projects yesterday.

Under the state’s comprehensive package of traffic management projects totalling RM6.3bil, the 12km Tanjung Bungah-Teluk Bahang paired road is scheduled to be ready by 2018, followed by the 4.6km bypass connecting the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu expressway with Bandar Baru Air Itam by 2019, and the 4.2km bypass connecting Gurney Drive to Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway in 2022.

The tunnel connecting Gurney Drive and Butterworth’s Bagan Ajam will be completed by 2025.

Lim said these projects would not only improve Penang’s economy, but also benefit all Malaysians.

“Apart from the multiple job opportunities, the contractors are committed in awarding contracts to Malaysians, especially Penangites,” he said after inking the agreement with Consortium Zenith BUCG Sdn Bhd, China Railway Construction Corporation International (CRCC), and Beijing Urban Construction Group.

During the ceremony, Zenith also separately signed two agreements with CRCC related to detailed project design, engineering, materials procurement and construction of the tunnel and the three toll-free expressways.

Lim emphasised that although the agreement has been signed, these projects must comply with the recommendations for construction impact mitigation following detailed environmental impact assessments (DEIA).

For this, Penang would appoint an independent company to conduct the DEIA on the four projects.

Meanwhile, Lim added that Barisan Nasional must accept Pakatan Rakyat’s offer to set up a three-person committee to implement reforms that will stop the abuses highlighted in the annual Auditor-General’s Report.

According to him, only a high-powered committee, with the Deputy Prime Minister as chair, as well as the Opposition leader and the Auditor-General, would be able to “put fear into the hearts of those who betray the public trust given to those acting as a custodian of public funds”.

    more house = more traffic, but more road is to dispense traffic…..
    have the facilities to dispense the traffic only can build more house…..

    always continue build build build, after years under BN, no proper planning see traffic jam everywhere. got land only build.

    other country like singapore, they build facilities like road first before build house.

    LMC apartments overflow…Penang people dont want to stay, all buy and rent to foreign workers!! Now, still demanding goverment to build more “affordable house”? Want cheap + big + delicious, that is the anticipation of Penang buyers, and they live in dream.

    Thums up to Lim !
    At least he is doing something good for penang.
    We all should aware that it takes time to implement and build these infrastructures. We can’t just say we want a road or a tunnel and we will be able to get these next month. It takes years. It is always good planning ahead. I live in overseas but every year I come back since Lim takeover Penang, I can see changes. My friend from other states and Hong Kong also said Penang is a nice place to live. If we can sort out the traffic problem which is one of the major issue in developed city, we will feel more comfortable.

    @Steve

    Care to share your observation as an “outsider” the changes you have seen since Lim took over?…:)

    One of the reasons HongKong’s not a nice place to stay is the properties there are too damn expensive. If you’re not rich, you need to work stressfully hard and hope you could earn enough to buy a decent house.

    @condomana

    I am a different Steve replying to you from Hong Kong

    Even if you are rich, the choice of decent houses in HK is very limited. They just don’t build decent sized homes here. The building quality and finishing is higher than Penang but the size is awful. If you find an apartment that is 1400 sqft net, it will usually have 4 bedrooms which are too damn small to be of much use other than putting a small bed inside, plus they always use bay windows which eats away at your space even more.

    yes I am different Steve, yes I am in Hong Kong. Agree that 1400 is a luxury here for most people. I do have friends who have 5,000 sqft but they are rare
